How much does a trip to Amsterdam cost?
When I first planned my trip to Amsterdam, I was honestly confused about the budget. Some websites said €70 per day was enough. Others said I needed €200 per day. The numbers were all over the place.
So I decided to break everything down in a simple way. That is why I created this calculator. I want to help you quickly estimate how much your trip might cost, without reading 10 different blog posts.
From my experience and research, Amsterdam is not a cheap city, but it is also not impossible if you plan well.
My honest breakdown of Amsterdam travel costs
Let me explain how I usually think about the budget.
1. Accommodation
This is usually the biggest expense.
- If you stay in a budget hotel or private hostel room, you might pay around €100–130 per night.
- A mid-range hotel can cost around €180–250 per night.
- Luxury hotels can easily go above €400 per night.
If you travel as a couple and share one room, the cost per person becomes more reasonable. That is why I calculate hotel cost per room, not per person.
2. Food
In Amsterdam, food isn’t very cheap, but it’s also not very expensive.
- If you eat simple meals, street food, or takeout, you might spend about €15 to €20 each meal.
- Expect to pay between €25 and €35 for a meal at a regular restaurant.
- A nice dinner can cost €50 or more per person.
- I usually plan for two meals a day for each person when I make a budget.
When I plan my budget, I usually calculate 2 meals per day per person.
3. Transport
Amsterdam’s public transportation works very well.
- A daily pass for the bus, tram, and metro costs about €9–10.
- If you stay for three days, I usually figure that each person needs three daily passes.
- You can save money on this if you walk a lot. You can walk a lot in Amsterdam.
4. Attractions and Museums
This is where a lot of people don’t think the budget is enough.
For instance:
- A ticket to the Van Gogh Museum costs about €22.
- Rijksmuseum is also about €22.
- The Anne Frank House costs about €16.
- It costs between €18 and €22 to take a canal cruise.
The total adds up quickly if you go to 3–4 attractions each day. That’s why I made sure to clearly show the cost of attractions in this calculator.
Is Amsterdam expensive?
I would say yes, compared to many European cities. But I also believe it depends on your travel style. If you: Share a hotel room, eat simple meals, plan your attractions in advance. Then your daily budget can stay reasonable. If you want comfort, private tours, and fine dining, the cost will increase fast.
Is the I Amsterdam City Card worth it?
Many friends asked me this question. The I amsterdam City Card includes:
- Free public transport
- Free entry to many museums
- Canal cruise
- Discounts at some attractions
If you plan to visit many museums and use public transport a lot, it can save you money. If you only plan to see one or two attractions and mostly walk, it may not be worth it. That is why I built the calculator to compare both options. I want you to see the numbers clearly before deciding.
How much money do I need per day in Amsterdam?
From what I have seen, here is a simple estimate per person:
- Budget style: €90–120 per day
- Mid-range style: €150–220 per day
- Luxury style: €300+ per day
Of course, this depends on your choices. But these numbers give a realistic starting point.
My final advice
If you ask me like a friend, I would say this: Do not try to make Amsterdam “super cheap”. Instead, plan smart.
- Book accommodation early
- Decide which museums are really important
- Check if the city card makes sense
- Use this calculator to test different scenarios
Small changes in your plan can save you €100–200 easily. I hope this tool helps you feel more confident about your trip budget. If I can make planning a little easier for you, then it has done its job.
