The best time to go to Keukenhof

Keukenhof is open from March to May, which is spring in the Netherlands, but Mid-April to early May is usually the best time to see tulips in Amsterdam in full bloom. You can only go at this time, so you should buy your ticket soon. If you want to avoid crowds, it’s best to go before 10:30 or after 16:00 in the afternoon. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are quieter than the weekends.

How to get to Keukenhof

Keukenhof is about 40 minutes from Amsterdam at Stationsweg 166A in Lisse. You can take a direct bus from Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport, Leiden, or Haarlem. For your convenience, you can buy a round-trip bus ticket and an entrance ticket at the same time. Park your car at the park and drive there. If you want to see everything, go on a guided tour. A lot of people choose the bus because it’s easy and saves time.

Map and layout of Keukenhof

Before you walk around, you should download or check the Keukenhof map when you get there. The park is big, about 32 acres, and has:

  • Flower gardens outside with different themes
  • Indoor pavilions with flower shows just for them
  • Places to walk and take pictures
  • A view of the windmill
  • Food and rest areas

What to look forward to at Keukenhof

As you walk further into the park, it starts to feel like you’re in a painting that is alive. There are endless fields of tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils in every direction. Each section is made in its own special way, so no two corners look the same. You take your time walking along the winding paths, letting your curiosity lead the way. Here, time goes by slowly. A short walk can turn into two or four hours, or even longer, because there’s always something new to find around the next corner. If you start to feel tired, you can stop at a cozy café to try some Dutch food or find a quiet spot on the grass to eat your own snacks while surrounded by flowers.

Helpful advice for your visit

Put on shoes that are comfortable because you will be walking a lot. If it’s sunny, bring sunscreen. Some areas have free Wi-Fi, and there are lockers near the entrance for small bags. If you want the best pictures, go early or late in the day when there are fewer people and the light is softer. It’s a good idea to book tickets ahead of time because they often sell out and have set times.

Things to do and not do

Get there early to avoid crowds and have a more peaceful time in the park. Please stay on the paths and don’t pick the flowers. Before you go, check the weather.

Don’t walk on flower beds or hurt the plants. If you only want to see tulips, don’t come too late in the season because some flowers may have already died. Don’t count on being able to buy tickets at the gate because they are limited.
